Alumni Association 150th Anniversary Exhibit
The M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives

Postcard and interior photo of Pierce Hall, ca. 1941. Dean of Women Anna E. Pierce, Class of 1884, wanted future women teachers housed in genteel surroundings. Note the Georgian exterior and rich interior moldings of the Pierce Hall reception room. Sayles Hall for men would later be built on the same model with heavily paneled reception rooms resembling an English manor house. The Alumni Association at one time owned all the land on Alumni Quad as well as numerous other houses for men and women students.
