What can I get through Interlibrary Loan? (Overview of Services)

Mission statement: The mission of the Interlibrary Loan Department is to support the research and teaching needs of the University at Albany academic community, by expanding the range of materials available for scholarship beyond the physical and electronic collections of the University Libraries. The department provides article delivery and short term loans from a vast network of libraries and document suppliers on a local, statewide, national, and international basis.

Scope of services:

Materials are obtained from libraries throughout the United States and also on an international basis, using bibliographic databases, Web catalogs, and document suppliers. The University Libraries participate in a number of resource sharing agreements. These include:

Filling your requests:

A recent study of a group of major research libraries indicates that our interlibrary loan department performs above average for research libraries in filling requests. The Interlibrary Loan Department makes every effort to obtain all materials requested. However, experience tells us that materials that fall into certain categories are more challenging to borrow, and the success rate for obtaining these types of materials tends to be a little lower.

In general, materials in the following categories are easily obtainable:

In general, items from these categories are more difficult to obtain:

A request for something from one of these categories may take more time than the average of two weeks to fill, or be filled with restrictions, such as shorter loan period, a "no photocopying" restriction, or a "library use only" restriction. Please discuss any special needs with Suzanne Turner, Head of Interlibrary Loan at STurner@uamail.albany.edu, or with Borrowing Researcher Peter Bae at PBae@uamail.albany.edu.

Please note: we do not order textbooks available through the University bookstore.

New policy re materials owned by the University Libraries:

Books: If a book is available through the University Libraries, it is not ordered through Interlibrary Loan if it is on the shelf or accessible through the reserve system. However, if the book is checked out you may chose either to recall it at the Circulation Desk or to order it through Interlibrary Loan. If you decide to order the book through ILL, please indicate in the notes field in the ILLiad book order form that our copy is checked out.

Articles: If an article is available from our print collections or from one of the online full text services to which we subscribe, we will not go forward with your request as an interlibrary loan transaction. The only exception is if the article is owned in hard copy only and if the article is missing from the journal or if the journal volume is at the bindery.

Note on the difference between Interlibrary Loan and UA Delivery Services:

Interlibrary Loan uses ILLiad software to manage requests. This software is also used for UA Delivery Services, the service for intercampus delivery of books (e.g. delivery of books between Dewey and the University Libraries) and electronic delivery of articles from the physical collections held by the University. The UA Delivery Services are not coordinated through Interlibrary Loan and are distributed at several service points, including the circulation departments of the three libraries and the periodicals department of the University Library, depending upon the call number of the item being requested. However, the Interlibrary Loan department can assist with password problems with ILLiad. The ILL Department is open 10:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m. on Monday-Friday. For help, call 518-442-3613.
