Miriam Snow Mathes Historical Children's Literature Collection
Established in 1986 through a bequest and subsequent gifts
from Mrs. Miriam Snow Mathes '26, this fund is used to enhance,
restore, and preserve the University Libraries' Children's
Historical Literature Collection. This collection of
more
than 10,000 books includes books and periodicals dating from
the early 19th through the mid-20th century. The content
runs the gamut from early religious tracts through primers
and ABC books and the classics to inexpensive series still
being added to today (e.g., Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys).
The strength of the collection,
and one of the main factors contributing to its uniqueness,
is that each item, when it is entered in the in-house index,
can be searched by terms reflecting genre, characters, setting,
subject matter and types of illustration. This collection
represents a fascinating record of
popular culture and what shaped the reading tastes of generations
of American readers. The collection provides a remarkable
archive on a chapter in our publishing history.
