Loan period:
An interlibrary loan transaction is made from one library to another for the use of an individual. Books borrowed through interlibrary loan are not to be placed on reserve. Items borrowed from other libraries are lent for a short period of time, generally 4 weeks, and they are subject to recall by lending libraries. One or two renewals are sometimes possible.
Local availability:
Materials owned by any of the three University Libraries, (University, Dewey, or Science) may not be requested through interlibrary loan if they are on the shelf and available for check-out. Before placing an interlibrary loan request, search our local catalog, Minerva, by clicking on the button below:
Articles available electronically through any of our many online full text services will not be ordered through Interlibrary Loan. If, in our verification process we determine that books are owned or accessible through our collections, we will e-mail you that we are not going forward with the request. If you have difficulty in locating a book, contact the circulation desk at any of the three libraries. If you have difficulty in accessing an online article, contact a reference librarian for assistance.
Copyright law:
The Copyright law of the United States (Title 17 US Code) holds libraries to limitations on copying requests under the provisions of the Contu “Fair Use” Guidelines. We are therefore limited on the number of copies we can request for journal titles and are prevented from requesting systematic or extensive copying of certain types of materials.
Types of materials:
Certain types of materials are difficult to obtain through Interlibrary Loan and may be lent with use restrictions. For more information, see Filling your requests.
Request limitations
There is no formal limit on the number of requests a user can place. The focus of the ILL Department is to support research and instruction, however it is not to supply required course textbooks. The Department reserves the right to limit the number of a user's requests. Because costs involved in Interlibrary Loan are subsidized by the University Libraries, we ask that you carefully consider the value to your research of the items you request.
