A photograph of leaders of New York State's CSEA and Lifespire, a not-for-profit provider of services to people with developmental disabilities, recently met to strengthen labor-management relations and plan strategies to improve quality of care in their operations. Last year, 1,200 Lifespire employees formed a union with CSEA and were recognized by management. Their first contract is in the works. CSEA questioned why the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities never replaced a problematic security system following a violent sexual attack on two female workers at the center. After an investigation by the union and a highly publicized demonstration, the center's management agreed the security problem existed, upgraded the current system, and committed to install immediately a more effective system. Under the Bush administration Americans saw the loss of 1.7 million jobs, erosion of health insurance coverage along with higher prices, gutting of workers safety and health protections and a National Labor Relations Board hell-bent on benefiting employers at the expense of workers.

Across New York state, union members are showing up wherever the Governor appears to protest and confront him about his threat to lay off 8,700 state employees. Union members are also holding rallies and demonstrations in front of the offices of legislative leaders who are backing the governor's plan.
