Entry 9 -- 1730s The Ancram Ironworks of Columbia County were
developed by Philip Livingston in the 1730s and 1740s. The mines used slave, as well as free,
labor.
Entry 277 -- 1939 Byrn Mawr Summer School for Women Workers moved to the Kingston area and became a year-round labor school for both women and men. It was renamed the Hudson River Labor School. Entry 299 -- 1948 The Bruderhof Christian Socialist Community was established in Rifton in 1948. Their co-op factory continues to make furniture and games for day care centers, and recently their members have been active in the anti-death penalty movement and other non-violent efforts.
