In 1995, members of the Albany
Chapter of the Graduate Student Employees Union (GSEU) staged a "Boston Tea Party"
demonstration to protest fee increases at the University at Albany, State University of
New York. Fee increases are not covered by the tuition waivers received by graduate
student employees of the university.
Participants in the demonstration dressed up as American colonists, wearing purple, black,
or red felt vests, sweat pants pushed up to the knee, shoes with paper "buckles," and tricorner
hats. They dumped "bales" bearing the names of various graduate student fees into
a fountain at the center of the University at Albany campus. Kathleen Sims, who made the
vests for all the demonstrators, kept one vest to hold the many buttons she collected
during her involvement with GSEU.
