Scope and Content:

The collection includes press releases, texts of Herbert Hoover's speeches, and reports from the U.S. Food Administration, 1917-1918; correspondence, articles, and speeches, 1930-1942; reports from legislative committees on municipal finances, law reform, and management, 1940-1973. The collection also documents Howard Palfrey Jones's career as an officer of the National Municipal League, 1929-1939; director of the New York State Commission on Revision of Tax Laws, 1936-1938; head of the New York State Civil Service Commission, 1939-1943; and as a U.S. Foreign Service officer in Germany, China, and Indonesia, 1948-1965.

Biographical / Historical:

Howard Palfrey Jones (1899-1973) had an active political career, serving as an officer in the National Municipal League, director of the New York State Commission on Revision of Tax Laws, and head of the New York State Civil Service Commission. He was an officer in the U.S. Foreign Service where he served as ambassador to Indonesia. He was also an editor, professor of journalism at the University of Michigan and New York University, and author of the book Indonesia: The Possible Dream.

Acquisition information:
Most items in this manuscript group were donated to the University Libraries, M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives, by Howard Palfrey Jones in 1970 . Additional materrial was added by George R. Colley in 1976 .
