Background

Scope and Content:

The collection is primarily composed of reel-to-reel audiotapes, audiocassette, DAT recordings, and born-digital audio of programs which aired on WAMC/Northeast Public Radio. The recordings include programs produced by WAMC as well as some produced by other stations. Note that the rights to reproduce or use recordings not produced by WAMC's National Productions remain with the creator of those programs. WAMC's National Productions produces several programs aired by its stations as well as hundreds of other radio stations around the world. WAMC's programs documented in the collection include 51%, The Best of Our Knowledge, The Book Show, Capitol Connection, The Environment Show, The Health Show, The Law Show, Legislative Gazette, Media Project, and many others. The collection also includes selected recordings produced primarily by other public radio stations. Much of this is music programs.

Biographical / Historical:

WAMC/Northeast Public Radio is a regional public radio network serving parts of seven northeastern states. WAMC was founded in 1958 as an affiliate of Albany Medical College. While affilated with Albany Medical College, WAMC's primary purpose was instructional, but a set number of hours each week were alloted to non-medical programming such as musical performances and talkshows. WAMC/Northeast Public Radio is a regional public radio network serving parts of seven northeastern US states including New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont, New Jersey, New Hampshire, and Pennsylvania. Stations and translators are in ten locations throughout the region. WAMC's studios and offices are located in Albany, NY. WAMC/Northeast Public Radio is a member of National Public Radio and an affiliate of Public Radio International. Financial support comes from listeners who contribute annually in fund drives and other appeals as well as from underwriting by businesses, grant support for WAMC's National Productions, and governmental sources such as the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and the New York State Education Department.

Acquisition information:
All items in this manuscript group were donated to the University Libraries, M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections and Archives by WAMC begining in June 2002.
