Background

Scope and Content:

The collection is composed entirely of photocopied materials. The originals are in the Deutsches Literaturarchiv, Marbach, Germany. The collection includes correspondence, manuscripts of novels, short stories, plays, poetry, and essays, 1940-46; lecture notes, 1956-61; and clippings, offprints, reviews, and biographies, 1927-36.

Biographical / Historical:

A writer, Joachim Maass (1901-1972) was born in Hamburg and came to the United States in 1938. He secured a positon at Mount Holyoke College in 1940, where he taught and lectured. He later taught German literature at Haverford College.

Acquisition information:
The M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections Archives received the papers from University at Albany Professor John Spalek in January 1977. Professor Spalek received them from retired Haverford College and West Chester(Pennsylvania) State College Professor Harry Pfund and his wife Marie Pfund in January 1977. The M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections Archives photocopied the papers before the originals were sent to the Deutsches Literaturarchiv, Marbach in 1977 . This was per Professor Pfund's request.
