Richard A, Myren was a Dean of the School of Criminal Justice at Albany. This collection includes correspondence, research data, and retained records of Richard A. Myren at the University of North Carolina, 1952-1956; Indiana University, 1955-1966; and as Dean of the School of Criminal Justice at Albany, 1966-1974.

Scope and Content:

This collection includes correspondence, research data, and retained records of Richard A. Myren at the University of North Carolina, 1952-1956; Indiana University, 1955-1966; and as Dean of the School of Criminal Justice at Albany, 1966-1974.

Biographical / Historical:

Richard A. Myren was born on August 9, 1924 in Madison, Wisconsin. After serving in World War II, Myren graduated from Harvard Law School in 1952 and recieved a Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of New Haven in 1976. Myren went on to become the Assistant Director and Assistant Research Professor at the Institute of Government at the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) and later Associate Professor of Police Administration at Indiana University.

Myren was the founding dean of the Graduate School of Criminal Jusitce at the State University of New York. Myren was known for his publications on law and was granted the Distingushed Service Award for Academic Leadership. Myren then went on to become the Dean of the School of Justice at American University until his retirement in 1986.

Myren was a consultant in law enforcement programs and was a visiting professor at many universities and colleges including Cambridge and Newnham College. Myren served as a special advisor to President Kennedy's Committee on Juvenile Delinquency and Youth Crime, and was a Fulbright Scholar in Corboda, Argentina.

Myren passed away on September 20, 2012 in Chicago, Illinois. Myren was survived by his wife Patricia and their four children.

Acquisition information:
Materials were donated to the M.E. Grenander Department of Special Collections Archives, yet little acquisition documentation exists. The undated original accession record for the collection was last modified on October 7th, 2009.
