Italian Literature and Language

I. General Purpose

The Italian language and literature collection is intended to support departmental teaching to the B.A. level as well as provide support for faculty research. The Italian collection also supports faculty and student needs in the Spanish Language and Literature graduate program. The program of Italian Studies forms part of the Hispanic and Italian Studies Department.

II. Subject and Language Modifiers

Languages: Italian and English are the primary languages collected. Materials in other European languages are not generally collected unless specifically requested by a faculty member or are known to be essential to the study of the field.

Geographical Areas: Italy, Switzerland, Europe (as appropriate).

Chronological Periods: Literary materials are collected from the 13th century to the present. Materials are collected on the development of the Italian language from its classical and vulgar Latin antecedents.

III. Description of Materials Collected

Types of Materials Collected: The collection is mostly comprised of monographs and serials, however, videotapes, audiotapes and CDs also form part of the collection. Materials such as dictionaries, encyclopedias and bibliographic indices are housed in the reference area and are frequently purchased by the Reference Bibliographer at the recommendation of the Bibliographerfor Hispanic and Italian Studies.

Scope of Material: Primary literary works, including prose, drama, and poetry; significant critical editions of literary works; literary criticism; literary history, including the literary influence on Spain; literary correspondence; literary biography; history of the Italian language.

Types of Materials Excluded: Textbooks.
