ChemSpider

ChemSpider can be used to search, aggregate, and data mine publicly available chemical information, including data from PubChem. It can be searched by exact structure, substructure, and similarily structure as well as by chemical names and molecular formula, and limited by properties. ChemSpider has been enhanced with calculated properties from ACD Labs. Currently, it searches over 16,500,000 compounds.

eMolecules

Formerly Chmoogle, eMolecules is a chemistry search engine. Draw and enter a structure or substructure; or enter a systematic, standard, common, brand, or chemical name, and eMolecules quickly searches over 6,000,000 substance records from sources like PubChem and vendors catalogs.

GradSchool Shopper: Graduate Programs Directory in the Physical Sciences and Engineering

GradSchool Shopper, a venture of the American Institute of Physics (AIP), is based on their annual publication Graduate Programs in Physics, Astonomy, and Related Fields, which is available in the the Science Library reference collection: Science REF QC 30 A552A. GradSchool Shopper allows prospective graduate students to search for programs by school, location, subject, and degree type. There are also supplementary resources and advice.

ChemBioGrid: Chemistry Databases on the Web

From the Chemical Informatics and Cyberinfrastructure Collaboratory (CICC) at Indiana University, this Web site lists and describes many major chemistry and biology databases and resources on the Web. It is classified into these categories: general; 2D structure; specific classes of compounds; drug-related; disease-related; physical properties, spectra, etc.; toxcity and environmental; biomolecules; metabolic pathways; Web services-enabled biosciences; commercial; and miscellaneous. There is also an alphabetical list of databases (resources) that is annotated.

American Mineralogist Crystal Structure Database

Maintained by the Mineralogical Society of America and the Mineralogical Association of Canada, this database contains every structure published in the American Mineralogist, The Canadian Mineralogist, and the European Journal of Mineralogy. Structures will be added from additional publications. Searchable by minerals, authors, chemistry, cell parameter and symmetry, or by a simple general search.

Bilbao Crystallographic Server

This site contains crystallographic programs and databases that use data from the International Tables for Crystallography. Arranged in 6 sections, users can select specific criteria and view data.

Klotho is an attempt to model biological processes. The database can be searched or browsed; results include a compound's stereochemical configuration.

PubChem is searchable structure database of small molecules with information on bioassay results, biological screenings, and related literature.

Reciprocal Net

Reciprocal Net contains a database of crystallography and molecular structure. It is both searchable and browsable. Funded by NSF, it is currently under development and will become part of the National Science Digital Library.

SIS Chemical Information

Search (using structure or compound identifier) the ChemIDplus database (367,000 chemical records) or the NCI-3D Database (213,628 Substances with 2D and 3D information); requires Chime plugin and a chemical drawing program.

Cramster

Cramster is a study community comprised of students and teachers helping each other to solve problems in mathematically-based subjects like chemistry, physics, and computer science; mathematics courses such as calculus and statistics are also covered. Cramster creates and provides access to study materials (textbook solutions, topic notes, sample problems, and practice tests) along with materials developed by community members. SciTalks: Chemistry

Launching with over 1,000 entries, SciTalks is a repository of science lectures and talks from all over the world. The lectures (talks) range in length from brief to lengthy, and from basic or humorous to complex and serious. SciTalks can be browsed by scientific fields, or the entire collection can be searched.

ChemIDplus

A file of over 339,000 compounds of biomedical & regulatory interest; records include CAS Registry Numbers & other identifying numbers, molecular formula, generic names, trivial names, other synonyms, MeSH headings, & file locators which lead users to other files.

Electrochemical Dictionary

Hosted by the Ernest B. Yeager Center for Electrochemistry at Case Western Reserve University, this dictionary contains over 800 terms. The definitions are concise and there are numerous cross references.

MedPhyt

Developed and funded by the Beilstein Institute and the Institute for Information Technology at the University Klagenfurt (Austria), MedPhyt is a database containing information about plants of medicinal and pharmaceutical interest. Initially, it will contain data on European plants. Plants from other continents will be added later. MedPhyt is freely available, but registration is required. English and German versions are available.

Merriam-Webster's Medical Dictionary

Merriam-Webster contains definitions of more than 59,000 medical terms. The dictionary may be searched or browsed, and links to additional information on other health and medical Web sites are also provided.

From the école Polytechnique de Montréal, F*A*C*T is a chemical software package for thermodynamic data. The software is not free, but the Web site offers free access to a subset of the database. Even without the full functionality provided by the software, this is an excellent tool for finding stable compounds of given elements under particular physical conditions.

International Critical Tables of Numerical Data, Physics, Chemistry and TechnologyAccessible to University at Albany users only

ICT contains the best (critical) data derived from the literature up to 1924. It includes data on physical, thermodynamic, mechanical, and other important properties for chemistry, physics, and engineering. The data is presented as text, equations, tables, graphs, and charts. ICT is fully searchable and the index is hyperlinked to the data.

IUPAC-NIST Solubility Database

The information in this database was originally published in the IUPAC-NIST Solubility Data Series. It is concerned primarily with liquid-liquid systems, however, a limited number of multi-component (organic-water-salt) systems are also included. There are over 30,000 solubility measurements.

Landolt-Börnstein Substance/Property Index

From the University of Hamburg (Germany), this Web site provides an index to compounds in Landolt-Börnstein's Numerical Data and Functional Relationships in Science and Technology. It can be searched by a combination of name, CAS registry number, formula, mass, or structure. It can also be browsed by organic name, formula, and CAS RN or inorganic formula and element system. Although this index links to the full text at Springer, the University at Albany does not subscribe to this service. Many of the volumes are available in the Science Library [QC 61 Z3].

Knovel Critical TablesAccessible to University at Albany users only

Knovel Critical Tables (kCT) are based on the International Critical Tables of Numeric Data, Physics, Chemistry, and Technology, and include up-to-date, evaluated data on over 13,000 compounds. The tables contain data on organic and inorganic compounds, and pure substances. New tables will be added to kCT on a regular basis. kCT is fully searchable.

The NIST Data Gateway provides access to broad range of property and substance data as well as to databases producted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

NIST WebBook

Organic Compounds Database

A database comprised of nearly 2,500 organic compounds, it may be searched by melting point, boiling point, index of refraction, molecular weight, formula, absorption wavelength, mass spectral peak, chemical type, and by partial name. Results include the same data plus additional critical information.

The PGM Database

The PGM Database (Platinum Group Metals) contains published data on the physical properties and characteristics of platinum group metals and their alloys. There is information on over 400 alloys. It is fully searchable and browsable.

Physical & Chemical Properties Data

This Web site, developed at the University of Wisconsin Chemistry Library, is a subject index to numerous physical and chemical property resources, both in print and online. Although it is an index to resources at the University of Wisconsin, the University at Albany has many of the books and online resources that are cited. You will need to check the UAlbany's Minerva catalog to see if is available.
