Selected Resources for Research in Educational Administration and Policy
This guide is intended to serve as a starting point for researching information on educational administration and policy
using both print and electronic resources available through the University at Albany Libraries. The prefix REF before the
call number of a book indicates that it is shelved in the Reference Area on the first floor. If the call number has no prefix,
the book is shelved in the general stacks on the upper floors of the main library. If the call number ends with WWW, the book is
an electronic resource. Most education materials will have call numbers that begin with the letter "L;" those books are shelved
on the third floor, northeast.
Subject Headings
Subjects for books in the University at Albany Libraries are based on Library of Congress (LC) Subject headings.
The subject headings function like a thesaurus, allowing you to find the relevant materials about a specific topic with
greater precision than keywords. They are especially helpful for searching library online catalogs. Examples of LC subject headings for various education topics are listed below.
All of the following entries are linked to the search results on the University at Albany Libraries' online catalog, Minerva. If you
need help in finding appropriate subject headings for your research, please consult a reference librarian or use the
Library of Congress Subject Headings (REF Z695 U4752X 2002) located near the Reference Desk area.

Browsing by Call Number
Call numbers are assigned to each book or journal. They arrange books and journals on the shelves in broad subject categories.
The University at Albany Libraries use the Library of Congress classification scheme. This call number system uses the combination of
letters and numeric numbers. The letters represent the subject, and "L" is the call number classification for
Education. The following entries are some examples. For a complete listing of LC call numbers, please visit the
Library of Congress Classification Outline.

Indexes and Databases
Indexes and abstracts are useful for finding journal articles, conference papers, government documents, and other types of publications, such as ERIC documents. The section below includes core indexes in both print and electronic format.
- Educational Administration Abstracts. Columbus, OH: Ohio State University, 1966+. Quarterly. Library has 1966+.
REF LB 2805 E48x [yr.]
Articles to be abstracted are selected from some 150 journals published in the U.S. and some Western European countries. Entries are presented in a classified topical arrangement. Author and subject indexes are also provided in each issue and cumulated author and subject indexes and a list of the source journals are provided in the 4th issue of each volume. Imprint varies. At present, distributed by Corwin Press, a Sage Publications Co.
- ERIC - Educational Resources Information Center
Updating of the ERIC database ceased during 2003 and was resumed in mid-2005 with a small number of entries dated 2004 and 2005. In order to retrieve additional references to journal articles from the years 2003 - 2005, it is necessary to supplement an ERIC search with a search of Education Full Text and other databases, such as the multidisciplinary databases linked below. At present, the ERIC Web site is the only version of ERIC that includes references to articles published in 2005.
The ERIC database consists of two files:
1. Journal articles (1969+).
Current Index to Journals in Education (CIJE). CIJE indexed articles from a large number of journals in Education and related fields until 2003. For references to articles from recent years (2003 - 2005), use Education Full Text and other databases in addition to ERIC. See suggested databases below.
2. ERIC Documents (1966+).
Resources in Education (RIE). Announces and summarizes research reports, bibliographies, speeches, syllabi, glossaries, conference papers, and various other types of publications.
- ERIC [via EBSCO].

If "Check SFX for availability" appears in the record, the entire text of the article may be available from another subscribed database. To find out or retrieve the article, click on that message.
When the message "Full text from ERIC" appears in the record, the item is an ERIC document. If you want to see the full text of the ERIC document, click on "Full text from ERIC."
- Education Full Text.
