Hispanic Society of America

Official web site of the Hispanic Society of America providing information about its museum and its library for the study of the arts and cultures of Spain, Portugal, and Latin America. It holds one of the greatest collections of Spanish imprints outside Spain.

Instituto Cervantes

The Instituto Cervantes aims to promote and teach Spanish and to spread the culture of Spain and Spanish-speaking countries worldwide. The Instituto Cervantes libraries provide access to a great variety of specialized resources on Spanish and Spain and Latin American culture. As a way of illustration, the Instituto Cervantes Library in New York City holds one of the most extensive Spanish video collections in the United States.

Portal del Hispanismo

This portal is geared towards hispanists. It features three main directory databases including information on hispanists, Spanish academic departments, and Hispanic associations worldwide. It provides news on events and resources. It also links to selected open access proceedings and other research texts.

Universia

This portal is focused on the Iberoamerican university community. It provides extensive information on academic programs, research, and grants. It also includes various directories featuring topics such as academic departments, scientific associations, etc. Information is also organized by national portals covering Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, España, Mexico, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

Biblioteca Virtual Miguel de Cervantes

This is the most comprehensive hispanic digital library. It aims to preserve and make accessible the hispanic cultural heritage available in various formats (mainly texts, images and videos). It includes portals organized by topics, authors, institutions, and historic figures. It offers two extensive sections devoted to Hispanic Language and Literature. It also features Bibliotecas del Mundo, an extensive subject directory of selected links focusing on hispanic studies and related issues.

Centro Virtual Cervantes

Gateway to resources about the Spanish language and culture in Spanish created by the Instituto Cervantes. It offers digital contents related to teaching Spanish as a second language, hispanic literature and the arts. Its targeted audience is primarily teaching faculty, students, translators and hispanists. It also includes a well-organized subject directory focused on hispanic literature and Spanish language known as the Oteador.

Iberia, the Caribbean and Latin America: Selected Internet Resources (Portals to the World, Library of Congress)

Guide to Internet resources specializing in Latin America and Iberia. Resources organized by country and then by topic. Selected and annotated by Library of Congress Hispanic Division staff. It includes a section devoted to information about the United States in Spanish.

Iberian Studies in SALALM

This is a selective guide to resources about Spain and Portugal. It links to resource guides, databases and web sites of cultural institutions, publishers and thesis & dissertations, etc. Information about library collections specializing in Spain and Portugal is also provided.

LANIC - Latin American Network Information Center

Main gateway for Latin American resources on the Internet. It includes a subject directory to selective links specializing in Latin America organized by country or topic. LANIC also offers some full-text resources. Interface in English, Portuguese and Spanish.

Bases de Datos Bibliográficas del CSIC

The CSIC (Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cientificas) is the Spanish Council for Scientific Research and serves as the main research body in Spain . This web site provides access to CSIC's free databases containing bibliographic information about the Spanish scientific production since the 70's.

CLASE - Citas Latinoamericanas en Ciencias Sociales y Humanidades

This database, created by the UNAM in Mexico, includes bibliographic information for more than 1,500 journals and 250,000 bibliographic entries (mainly journal articles) published in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is specialized in social sciences and humanities. It provides links to some full-text articles available in other web sites.

Compludoc

Developed by the Universidad Complutense in Spain, the database indexes more than 4,000 journals and provides bibliographic information for more than 3 million articles mainly published in Spain but also published in other countries. It covers humanities journals since 1997.

Dialnet

Compiled and maintained by the University of la Rioja in Spain, the database offers bibliographic information for more than 3,000 journals and one million documents (mainly published in Spain and Latin America). It also provides full-text access to some articles and dissertations provided by external resources. It features an alert service for new journal issues.

Handbook of Latin American Studies (HLAS)

A bibliography on Latin America consisting of works selected and annotated by scholars and edited by the Hispanic Division of the Library of Congress. Its coverage is from 1935 onward. Links to full-text are provided for e-journals to which the library subscribes. Also links to freely available resources are included for records from 1990 forward. Access to Advanced Search Options is also available since 1990.This option offers additional features such as Boolean search and the possibility to save and email search results. Interface in English, Portuguese and Spanish.

HAPI - Hispanic American Periodicals IndexAccessible to University at Albany users only

HAPI includes research information about Latin America, the Caribbean and US latinos. It provides access to bibliographic information for more than 265,000 scholarly articles from over 500 key journals worldwide. Coverage is from 1970 to the present. Links to full-text articles will take you to either e-journals to which the library subscribes or to freely available articles on the web. It also indexes book reviews from the period 1970-2001. Interface in English, Portuguese and Spanish.

LAPTOC - Latin American Periodicals Tables of Contents

"LAPTOC is a searchable Web database that provides access to the tables of contents of more than 1,000 journals (more than 30,000 bibliographic records), primarily in the humanities and social sciences, published in Latin America." Developed by the Latin Americanist Research Resources Project (LARRP). Its coverage is from the 1940's onward.

Linguistics and Language Behavior AbstractsAccessible to University at Albany users only

This is the standard database for Linguistics and Language. It covers international literature in all aspects of the study of language (including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics) and linguistics (including descriptive, historical, comparative, theoretical and geographical linguistics). It includes bibliographic information from 1973 to the present. Full-text is available for e-journals to which the library subscribes. Interface also available in Spanish.

MLA International BibliographyAccessible to University at Albany users only

Produced by the Modern Language Association, this database consists of bibliographic records pertaining to literature, language, linguistics, and folklore. It draws on scholarly research in over 3,000 journals and series, covering relevant monographs, working papers, proceedings, bibliographies, and other formats. It contains more than 1.4 million citations to published scholarly literature. Its coverage is from 1963 onward. Full-text is available for e-journals to which the library subscribes . Interface also available in Spanish.

Corpus de Referencia del Español Actual (CREA)

This reference corpus of modern Spanish is a data bank that provides a structured set of texts for lexicographic and grammatical research. It compiles texts found in journals, newspapers, books and oral transcriptions covering the last 25 years. Half of its content represents texts from Spain and the other half represents texts published in Latin America. Created by the Spanish Royal Academy.

Corpus del Español

Funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities and created by Prof. Mark Davies of Brigham Young University, this corpus of Spanish covers text dating from the 1200s to the 1900s (all published before 2000) . It contains 100 million words ranging from textual sources such as manuscripts and books to oral transcriptions. Interface in English and Spanish.

Corpus Diacrónico del Español (CORDE)

The Diachronic Corpus of Spanish is a data bank that provides a structured set of texts for lexicographic and grammatical research dating from the beginning of the Spanish language until 1975. 74% of the texts compiled originated in Spain and the rest in Latin American countries. It is divided into two main groups: fiction and non-fiction texts. Created by the Royal Spanish Academy.

Diccionario de la Lengua Española

This is the online version of the Spanish language dictionary created by the Spanish Royal Academy.

Diccionario Panhispánico de Dudas

Online version of the Panhispanic Dictionary of Doubts. Its aim is to clarify the doubts of all Spanish speakers around the world regarding the use of the language. Developed in conjunction with the 21 other Spanish language academies located in the Americas and the Philippines.

This web site provides access to the following types of Spanish online dictionaries: Monolingual, Synonyms and Antonyms, Ideological, Bilingual (Spanish-English, Spanish-French, Spanish-German,Spanish-Catalan,Spanish-Portuguese, Spanish-Catalan, and Spanish-Italian). Dictionary of Foreign Phrases and AbbreviationsAccessible to University at Albany users only

The third edition of this standard reference book lists in one alphabetical sequence foreign phrases, proverbs, maxims and abbreviations frequently used in written and spoken English. An index of phrases by language follows the main alphabetical list. The completely revised and updated third edition has been enlarged by the addition of pronunciation guides, by more than 500 new entries, and by the inclusion of sources of many expressions.

This database, created by the Spanish Royal Academy, allows you to simultaneously search in 57 Spanish language historical dictionaries published from 1726 to 1992.

Developed by the Spanish Ministry of Culture, this is cooperative digital library that provides access to bibliographic materials from state public libraries and other cultural institutions in Spain. The documents included are fully searchable and available as images that exactly reproduce the originals. Interface available in English, Spanish and other languages in Spain.

Biblioteca Virtual del Patrimonio Bibliográfico

"The Virtual Library of Bibliographical Heritage is a cooperative project of the Ministry of Culture and the Autonomous Regions, which aims to distribute printed books and manuscripts from Spain's Historical Heritage by digital facsimile." Interface available in English, Spanish and other languages in Spain.

Biblioteca Virtual del Bicentenario 1810-2010 (Chile)

Digital library composed of significant titles related to the Chilean culture, focusing on history and literature since the colonial period until present time.

Directorio y Recolector de Recursos Digitales

This web site presents two useful resources: an extensive directory of digital projects created in Spain and a search tool known as "Recolector" that allows you to search for any digitized document available in any of the digital projects included in the directory. Interface available in English, Spanish and other languages in Spain.

Hemeroteca Digital

Digital collection of Spanish periodicals and newspapers created by the National Library of Spain. It represents a wide variety of publications such as political and literary, ranging from 1772 to 1933. Full texts are available in PDF format and fully searchable.

Ibero-American Electronic Text Series

This digital library is devoted to Latin American and Iberian works in the humanities. "Currently, the series holds over 35 titles in Spanish that cover a wide array of works from Latin America and Spain that span from the medieval to contemporary period." This project is developed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Memoria Chilena

Portal devoted to culture in Chile. It primarily focuses on literature, history and the arts. It includes an outstanding digital collections of e-books, articles, web sites, and audiovisual materials.

PARES - Portal de Archivos Españoles

PARES aims to promote the Spanish heritage held in Spanish archives. The database of this portal allows you to search for records describing an extensive number of documents. Many of them are available in digital format. Maintained by the Spanish Ministry of Culture.

A multi-subject collection of Spanish language, general interest magazines and scholarly journals. It provides access to the full-text of more than 300 periodicals. Its coverage is from 1994 onward.

Google Book Search

This is a database that allows you to search the full text of books. All the works are searchable even if they are under copyright but only the full text of books that are in the public domain are freely accessible. For those under copyright, one can access only a partial view unless the publisher has authorized to access the whole book. Spanish interface of Google Book Search is also available: Google Búsqueda de Libros.

Literature Resource CenterAccessible to University at Albany users only

Especially useful for an undergraduate student audience, this database provides access to full-text biographical, bibliographical, and critical analysis resources mainly from the core works Contemporary Authors, Dictionary of Literary Biography, and Contemporary Literary Criticism. It includes fiction, nonfiction, poetry, drama, history, and journalism. As far as hispanic literature is concerned, this database is only relevant for major authors.

Redalyc - Red de Revistas Científicas de América Latina y el Caribe, España y Portugal

This is the Network of Scientific Journals of Latin America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal (Redalyc), coordinated by Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México. It provides open access to more than 300 scientific journals (over 45,000 articles) specializing in the social sciences and the humanities and organized by country and topic. It also includes journals about Latin America but published in other countries.

Twayner's Authors SeriesAccessible to University at Albany users only

In-depth critical introduction to over 600 authors. It covers a wide range of chronological and geographical locations. As far as hispanic literature is concerned, it only includes major authors.

Banco de Imágenes y Sonidos

Created by the Spanish Ministry of Education, this is an excellent resource to find images and sounds. It allows searching by format, collections, and subjects.

REALIA: Rich Electronic Archive for Language Instruction Anywhere

"The REALIA Project publishes faculty-reviewed media for the teaching and study of modern languages and cultures." Its online database provides access to high-quality digital images that can be searched by language, theme and topic, among other options. As far as hispanic coverage is concerned, it includes images of the following countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Costa Rica, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Spain, and Uruguay. Each image is throroughly described using a rich metadata set.

Perry-Castañeda Library Map Collection

This is one of the most comprehensive online map collections freely available on the Internet. It gathers a wide variety of maps such as historical, topical and political maps. Organized geographically and by map type. Maintained by the University of Texas at Austin.

Vistas: Visual Culture in Spanish America 1520-1820

This is a highly visual web site that provides access to digital images, interpretive essays, and a searchable bibliography on visual culture in Spanish America from colonial times until 1820.

Biblioteca Nacional de España

Official website of the National Library in Spain. It offers acess to its resources and services. It also features a web page, Colecciones Digitales, where all its digital collections are highlighted including a digital collection of Spanish historical periodicals and newspapers, a collection of digitized materials in various formats, and a digital collection of Spanish literary classics.

Bibliotecas Españolas y de Todo el Mundo

This library directory is divided into two sections. The first one focuses on Spanish libraries and is organized alphabetically, by region or type of libray and it provides links to both library web sites and online catalogs. The second section is devoted to libraries worldwide, and includes links to national libraries and national and international library directories.

Hispanic Reading Room. Library of Congress

The Hispanic Reading Room serves as the primary access point for research relating to Hispanic materials throughout the Library of Congress. The hispanic collections at the Library of Congress are among the most comprehensive hispanic collections worldwide. This web site offers acces to digital collections focusing on hispanic culture. This database is the main point of access to bibliographic information on Catalan language and culture. Popularly considered by students and researchers as the MLA for Catalan language and culture.

Barahona Center for the Study of Books in Spanish for Children and Adolescents

This web site offers two valuable resources maintained by the Barahona Center: a database of recommended books in Spanish and a database of recommended books about latinos in English language. Both of them are updated weekly and feature useful search options such as limiting your searches by age/grade and subject. Interface available in English and Spanish.

SOL - Servicio de Orientación de Lectura Infantil y Juvenil

An excellent resource that aims to promote reading among children and young adults. It includes a selection of recommended books in Spanish organized by age and searchable alphabetically, by topic and by type of character (such as animals, mythological figures, etc.). Information is presented in a highly visual format, sometimes using multimedia features. It also provides a set of useful resource tools such as a directory and publications specialized in this topic.
