Using the Internet

The Internet is a useful source of information for criminal justice. Information available on the Internet is included in World Wide Web sites, discussion lists, and electronic subscriptions.

A lot of criminal justice information is generated by government (at all levels) or by advocacy groups.  This kind of information is usually freely available on the World Wide Web.  Reports, statistics, news, and legal materials can be found in this manner.  Information on people or organizations can often also be located.

The best source for reports on the Internet is the U.S. Department of Justice and its research arm, National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS).  NCJRS has a web site, Justice Information Center which includes NCJRS Abstracts Database, fulltext of or links to reports and other documents, a calendar of events, grants information, etc.  Recent fulltext reports are also arranged in
broad subject categories for browsing.

Look for statistics, news and other useful criminal justice information on the University Libraries Criminal Justice guide.  For legal information look at the Legal Research section of this tutorial.
