Excitement is growing as we prepare for the move of selected collections and services to the new library building sometime in June. Faculty and students are already asking, "What are you going to do with all the empty space in the University Library, once you move things to the new building?" The photographs below provide some answers to this question. They make the case most eloquently that we are already in desperate need of space in the University Library to create a more learning-centered environment. Renovation projects will begin in July, 1999 and continue through the next several years. Among our highest priorities are: creation of a Current Periodicals Reading Room, expansion of the Interactive Media Center, rearrangement of the bound periodicals collection, consolidation of microform collections, addition of 300 user seats, creation of a new Computer User Room on the first floor of the University Library, and development of a new electronic classroom for information literacy instruction. As money is available, we also plan to recarpet.

| Growing collections resulted in overcrowded stacks with no growth space and a severe reduction in user seating space. The move of the science and mathematics collections to the new library building will allow for collection growth space, new space for quiet study, and the restoration of 300 user seats in the University Library. | |
