Library of Congress Classification

CALL NUMBERS are the numbers printed on the spines of library books that determine where the books are found on the shelves. The LIBRARY OF CONGRESS (or LC) numbers used in the University Libraries are composed of letters and numbers. The top line, consisting of one or two letters, indicates the main subject or classification, the next line (number), is for the special aspect of the book, the third of the call number is the code of the author or title of the book and ia a decimal number. A fourth line may be used to indicate date or volume.
