Using EndNote

EndNote with a Word Processor

EndNote comes with the ability to work with citations in other software packages with the Cite While You Write feature, which allows you to insert citations from your EndNote library into a Word document. In Word, look for the EndNote menu under the Tools menu. There is also an EndNote toolbar. If you don't see the EndNote toolbar, select Toolbars>EndNote from the View menu in Word to make it active.

Inserting Citations in Word

  • To insert citations, click where you want the citation to be inserted, then go to Tools --> EndNote X --> Find Citations.
  • A search box will come up. Put in enough information in the search field (author's last name, for example) to find the reference. Click Search.
  • Click the source you want to select it. Click Insert. This puts both a citation in-text and a bibliography entry at the end.
  • The formats are customizable. See Using Output Styles.

Formatting Citations in Other Documents

  • If you're working in something other than Word, you can still use EndNote to format your citations. See the EndNote User's Guide for instructions.
