The collection contains biographical materials, 1939-1957, correspondence, in part pertaining to Thomas Mann, and printed materials.
- Biographical / Historical:
Siegfried Marck was born on March 9, 1889 in Breslau, Silesia. The Marck family was very active in the Jewish community in their town. Siegfried Marck graduated from Johannesgymnasium Breslau in 1907 and went on to study law at Friedrich-Wilhelms- Universitat Breslau and Geneva. Eventually, he switched his major to philosophy and received his doctorate in 1911. After participating in World War, I, Marck began teaching at Wroclaw University in 1922.
When Hitler gained control of Germany, Marck emigrated to France and in 1939, he emigrated to the United States. Marck began to give lectures at Chicago's YMCA College and eventually helped found the Roosevelt College in Chicago where he taught until he retired in 1954. Marck was known for many of his publications on philosophy and Judaism. Siegfried Marck died on February 16, 1957 in Chicago, Illinois.
