- Scope and Content:
The collection contains manuscripts, some with corrections, of seven plays in English on theater, dance, and German literature.
- Biographical / Historical:
Dance critic, author, poet, translator, and painter, Walter Sorell was born in Vienna in 1905. He attended the University of Vienna but later settled in New York in 1939 after fleeing the Nazis. Sorell was well known as the New York dance critic for the Providence Journal and a contributor to other dance publications. He also wrote over 25 books in German and English and translated others from German into English. He published plays and poetry, did radio broadcasts, and exhibited his paintings. Sorrel lived in New York and Zurich. He died at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York on February 21, 1997 leaving behind his wife, Gertrude Maria, a step-son, two granddaughters, and three great-granddaughters.
