While one librarian retires from Dewey, a new one comes to take over his responsibilities. So say hello to Cathy Dwyer, a librarian you may recognize from the uptown campus! As former head of reference for the Main and Science Libraries, as well as overseer of the federal depository, she brings a lot of experience with her, and looks forward to the opportunity to do more collection development.

In a landmark decision on June 26, 2015, the Supreme Court ruled marriage equality is protected under the Fourteenth Amendment of the United States Constitution. The ruling legalizes same-sex marriage in all states. This has been a long-awaited victory for those who have fought long and hard for equality. This week we give you some interesting resources to trace the origins of this long struggle.

Dewey Library is soon saying a fond farewell to Richard Irving, our subject specialist for criminal justice, law, political science, and public administration and policy. Our venerable colleague has elected to retire this summer. We took some time to chat with Dewey’s departing “elder statesman” about the changes he’s seen in seen in libraries and academia through his over 35 years at UAlbany.

The Dewey Library celebrates more staff awards. At this year's Library Recognition Ceremony two of our own won the Martha Caroline Pritchard Award for Information Science students working with library faculty on a project or initiative that leads to an improvement in the services of the University Libraries. This year’s winners are Elaine Lasda Bergman and Reference Associate Alex Hoag.

Check out our new display! June is LGBT Pride Month and the Dewey Library is celebrating it in style. SUNY Albany has many resources for LGBT students, and the libraries are no exception. This display is intended to bring visibility to the LGBT resources the library has, the issues faced by the LGBT community, and show that Dewey is an open, affirming place that supports equality.

Two of the Dewey Library’s own were recognized recently for their spectacular service to the University at Albany. Lindsay Van Berkom has won the President’s Excellence Award in Professional Service and Elaine Lasda Bergman has won the President’s Excellence Award in Librarianship. Congratulations to both of them for the recognition of their dedication to the Libraries and the University!

Summer sessions of the Social Welfare Library Research Seminar begin today. The 90 minute class covers basic to sophisticated search strategies, locating journal articles you need when full text is not in a database or Google Scholar, and how to evaluate the materials you have retrieved. The sooner you take the class, the better prepared you will be when those research assignments are coming due!
