Orientation Leaders toured the University Libraries on June 18th, and they brought plenty of tips for new students.
The visit took place as part of a month-long training curriculum for the University at Albany Orientation and Transition Programs staff. It included an overview of library services, a preview of new features coming this summer, and a tour of the University Library itself.
The Orientation Leaders took time out of their busy schedules to provide their tried-and-true library strategies for the Class of 2023.
Librarians are here to help
“Every major is supported by a librarian,” says Noel, a student in the Class of 2020. “Connecting with your librarian will be crucial to your success at UAlbany!”
Brendan, also Class of 2020, agrees with this strategy.
“Don’t be afraid to reach out to a librarian if you need help,” he explains. “They are all friendly and happy to help.”
There’s a library zone for you
The University Libraries map out each building into zones that correspond to a different volume level. This helps students find the right place to study based on their preferences. The three categories are collaborative, quiet, and silent.
The variety of study spaces leads Jeremy, Class of 2021, to call the libraries “the greatest places to work by yourself or collaboratively.”
Many of the Orientation Leaders, however, caution new students to understand the difference between collaborative work and socializing.
“If your friends are in the collaborative zone, but you can’t focus, go somewhere else!” says Iormares, Class of 2022.
Other pieces of advice
“The floating whiteboards throughout the building have so many uses. Make sure to get the most out of your study time.”
– Amelia (Class of 2020)
“Make sure to bring cash if you need to print. Printing is 10 cents each for black and white, and 50 cents for color.”
– Shirley (Class of 2020)
“Rent out the group study rooms. They are free and very useful!”
– Barbara (Class of 2022)
The University Libraries will have a table at each orientation’s resource fair. Stop by to learn more about the libraries before arriving to campus in the fall!
