Public workstations in the Information Commons are provided to connect users to a wide array of subscription databases and resources licensed and linked to support scholarly and research activities at the University. Failure to observe workstation usage policies and University policies governing the use of services delivered over the Internet may result in the loss of privileges and a judicial referral.
- Users are expected to comply with copyright laws and guidelines.
- Users are expected to comply with the Responsible Use of Information Technology, approved by the UAlbany's University Senate.
- Students are bound by the policies described in Community Rights & Responsibilities, distributed and enforced by the office of Judicial Affairs.
- Although we do not monitor information sought or read by library users, to the extent that usage information is "captured" on computer logs, the University Libraries and University at Albany Information Technology Services may have to comply with a court order requesting such information under the Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act of 2001, also known as the USA Patriot Act.
- Prohibited activities include:
- Downloading web pages, software, etc. to the hard drives of these workstations.
- Changing software settings, altering wallpaper, deleting desktop shortcuts, etc.
- Tampering with the operating system.
- Hacking through security settings.
- Using the workstation to play games for leisure activities while other patrons are waiting to use workstations for research and other academic activities.
- Guest access to Information Commons Workstations is only available at the University Library.
