As part of the special Kickoff edition of the Library Update newsletter, we reached out to the Marching Great Danes to see how they use the University Libraries. The Marching Great Danes debuted in 2013 and perform at halftime during all home games, as well as in the stands and at parades.

How do you like to use the University Libraries?

I like to use the University Libraries to study alone or with groups of people. I personally like to study alone on the second floor of the University Library, in one of the study rooms, or on the first floor with a group.

In what ways have the University Libraries contributed to your success as a student?

The Libraries have contributed to my success as a student by allowing me to have access to the many different resources within the Libraries themselves or even on the website. These resources have helped me in many of my classes.

What tips about using the Libraries would you give to a new student?

Any new student wanting to use the Libraries should know about the different quiet zones each of the Libraries have on the different floors. There are signs posted around each floor of the different Libraries. They should also know about the Libraries' website and the many resources on it.

Let’s talk school spirit. What about the Libraries makes you proud to be a Great Dane?

The Libraries have many different events throughout the semester that can connect you with many different people, from students to staff members. These events can help you get to know the many resources the Libraries have to offer. The Libraries also have a wide variety of books and resources among many different topics and genres.

How do you like to use the University Libraries?

I like using the University Library as a study space. It motivates me to sit down and get work done that I may not be as likely to complete if I were just sitting at my computer in my room. I get distracted easily, so it's nice to have a neutral space where I'm surrounded by other people doing work, too.

In what ways have the University Libraries contributed to your success as a student?

My major is extremely research-heavy, so having access to thousands of online texts through the University's Digital Library is a lifesaver. All of the studies, articles, and journals that I may need are conveniently in one place and have helped me finish some last-minute papers in a pinch.

What tips about using the Libraries would you give to a new student?

Take advantage of it! You have so much material right at your fingertips that you won't have forever. Even if you just want to satisfy a curiosity about something, you can find hundreds of articles online or books in the stacks about what you're interested in. I've even gone into the University Library a couple of times just to wander through the aisles and thumb through a few books that looked cool. It's definitely worth doing at least once– you'll be surprised by some of the stuff you find.

A library seems to be the epitome of the college experience so it's really great that our University dedicates so many resources to the Libraries and encourages students to use them to their fullest extent. With not one but three huge libraries, it's nice to know that I never have to go far to be reminded of why we're here.

How do you like to use the University Libraries?

I love using the University Libraries as a quiet study space away from the noise and distractions of my house. I have spent hours in the President's Reading Room with my earbuds in, listening to music and working on everything from writing essays to memorizing shows for Marching Band.

In what ways have the University Libraries contributed to your success as a student?

The University Libraries have been amazingly helpful as a research database provider for me. I have used the online databases countless times to help make my writing stronger.

What tips about using the Libraries would you give to a new student?

I recommend that new students take the time to walk through and become familiar with the Libraries before mid-terms or finals week. It's much less stressful to use the Libraries when you know where everything is, and how to use the resources available there when there are no looming deadlines and before they are full of students trying to do the same during the busier times of the year.

I feel that the variety of the UAlbany Libraries is very reflective of UAlbany as a whole, from the beautiful stained glass of the historic Dewey Library to the clean-cut minimalism of the Science Library and the quiet comforts of the University Library. I am proud that the UAlbany Libraries are just as diverse as the history and student body of UAlbany, and I am proud to be a Great Dane!
