The University at Albany Libraries, in partnership with the Empire State Library Network (ESLN), is thrilled to announce the receipt of a $249,996 grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This significant funding, provided through the National Leadership Grants for Libraries program, will support the ArcLight Integration Project, an initiative aimed at revolutionizing access to the digital and physical archival collections.
Advancing Digital Access and Supporting Research
The ArcLight Integration Project will transform how researchers and students interact with archival materials by developing a unified system for discovering and accessing both physical and digital collections. This initiative will significantly enhance the accessibility of primary source documents and rare materials, making them easier to explore both on-campus and online. By improving these access points, the project will empower UAlbany students to conduct in-depth research and engage more effectively with primary sources, while also benefiting researchers around the world who rely on these unique collections.
The M.E. Grenander Special Collections, Archives, and Preservation is a national leader in developing innovative systems for digital archives. As the first institution in the nation to implement ArcLight, the department has paved the way for a growing number of major research libraries. This project builds on the department’s track record of securing funding for digital repositories and born-digital archives, demonstrating a strong commitment to advancing research with digital archives.

Building a Collaborative Future
This project will also facilitate a collaborative effort among experts in archival theory and practice to develop new specifications for integrating digital and physical archival materials. This work will set a new precedent for archival systems, benefiting institutions nationwide and ensuring access to important historical documentation.
This funding will not only enhance local access to archival materials but also integrates UAlbany’s innovative systems into state-level access portals, including EmpireADC for New York and Connecticut Archives Online for Connecticut. This integration will support access to unique collections held in small archives throughout both states, reinforcing the Libraries' leadership in the region.
Enhancing Student Research
The grant will directly benefit UAlbany students by providing them with enhanced tools to access and engage with primary source materials. The Libraries' extensive collections, which include significant archives related to New York State politics and capital punishment in the United States, are crucial for academic inquiry. This project will make these materials easier to discover and use, supporting students in their research and learning endeavors.
Supporting Innovative Research with a Global Impact
This grant underscores the University at Albany Libraries' success in innovative research and technology. The ArcLight Integration Project not only enhances access to invaluable archival materials but also highlights the Libraries' dedication to innovation and research excellence. By improving the discoverability and usability of their collections, the Libraries are enhancing UAlbany students' research capabilities and supporting global scholarship. This project reaffirms the Libraries' role as a leader in developing advanced systems for digital archives.
