Upcoming Change to EBSCO Full eBook Downloads

On April 14, EBSCO eBooks will be transitioning to a new Digital Rights Management (DRM) solution called Readium LCP DRM. This change affects the downloading of full eBooks from the EBSCO platform for offline reading. Chapter downloads will remain unaffected, and full eBooks can be read online without any change to the process.

On April 14, eBook vendor EBSCO will change how full eBook downloads are managed and accessed. Chapter downloads and online access to full eBooks will remain unaffected.

What’s Changing:

  • Users will need to install the free Thorium Reader program, or another compatible application to download full eBooks for offline reading
Adobe Digital Editions will no longer be compatible. eBooks already downloaded in Adobe Digital Editions as of April 14 can continue to be read there until the checkout expires, or a new file for the book can be downloaded into Thorium Reader instead.
  • Thorium Reader offers improved accessibility features.
This includes compatibility with screen readers. There is not currently a mobile app available, but apps are in development.
  • A free MyEBSCO account will continue to be required to download full eBooks.
When you select a full book for download, you will be given a passphrase from EBSCO that you will need to enter into Thorium Reader to open the downloaded eBook. The passphrase can be used on up to 6 devices at a time, and Thorium Reader will remember all previous passphrases on a given device so that you will not need to reenter it each time.

More information can be found on the EBSCO FAQ or the Thorium Reader website
