Fresh off the successful renovation of the Minerva Room, the University Libraries are bringing new life to the President’s Reading Room. A remodeling of the loft space in the University Library has been underway throughout the summer, with completion slated for mid-September.

President Havidán Rodríguez will officially re-open the space during a special ceremony at 11:15 A.M. on Thursday, September 12. All members of the campus community are invited to attend.

Rendering of the remodeled President's Reading Room

Preliminary discussions for remodeling the President’s Reading Room began in October 2022. The project gathered momentum throughout 2023 as the University Art Museum joined the conversation. Work began in the President’s Reading Room in May 2024, shortly after commencement.

“The newly reconfigured salon-style display of UAlbany presidents offers a fresh take on traditional presentations,” says Corinna Ripps Schaming, Director and Chief Curator of the University Art Museum. “It features a mix of eight oil portraits, nine black-and-white reprints of past presidents for whom no paintings exist, and three contemporary color photographic portraits of our most recent presidents. All 20 presidents since 1844 are displayed on a bold purple wall, merging an older tradition of hanging portraits on dark-hued backgrounds with a nod to UAlbany’s signature color.

“The mix of frames--from gilded to contemporary black metal-- is another acknowledgement of stylistic change. The portraits are positioned closer to eye level, reflecting the dignity of a University president while fostering a sense of democratic engagement with students in the Reading Room. Overall, this new presentation acknowledges the University’s rich history in a complete and accessible manner, unique to our campus.”

In addition to the portraits, the University Libraries will equip the President’s Reading Room will brand new furniture, including 10 tables, 20 upholstered chairs, and six Herman Miller plex chairs. New plants will also add greenery to the space.

Editor's note: An earlier version of this story indicated the re-opening would take place at 4:00 P.M. - the event has been rescheduled for 11:15 A.M.
